Alabama Covering Kids & Families Initiative

Grant Overview
The Alabama Department of Public Health, Children's Health Insurance Program was selected by the Statewide Covering Kids & Families Coalition, to administer the final two years of the efforts to reduce the number of uninsured Alabama children who are eligible for Medicaid, ALL Kids (SCHIP) or the Alabama Child Caring Program coverage. The coalition has adopted the CKF strategies of coordinating outreach programs, simplifying the processes for enrollment and renewal, and coordinating the existing health coverage programs. Specifically, efforts will be focused on (1) having all program correspondence for the insuring programs translated into Spanish, and developing a mechanism to insure that materials are sent in the appropriate language, (2) awarding mini-grants to local communities to develop and pilot innovative efforts that can be replicated statewide, (3) building on The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Supporting Families after Welfare Reform funded Web application system to engage additional community partners, and (4) hosting a statewide conference to emphasize the value of health care coverage and showcase innovative and effective community strategies. In addition, the Coalition will coordinate with the two local projects in Jefferson and Mobile counties.
